The Evolution of A Crazy Cool Wireless Virtual Workforce

By Frances Palaschuk • July 19th, 2008

girl on phoneI worked in administration in the corporate world for 13 years before starting my virtual assistant business. And I worked darn hard to make my way up the corporate ladder from receptionist to office administrator and executive assistant.

Although I went through a 3 year business administration program and several professional development courses and hold other accreditation’s they always want to hire experienced people.

I started my career in an extremely busy real estate office as a receptionist before the computerized appointment system was even introduced. I am sure you can imagine how much paper it took to book appointments for over 50 real estate agents in Ottawa, Canada’s Capital Region.  If I recall we had at least three active 5 inch binders on the go at all times… Oh, and did I mention that we had a switchboard with corded handsets… Yes I mean traditional handsets with the crazy curly always tangled up receiver that you had to hold by hand.

I don’t know if you ever worked with sales representatives whose entire income relies on the sale of a home or not but man, that sure makes for a special environment.  Now with that said, oddly enough, it was the most exciting, dynamic and challenging environment that I have ever experienced. I loved it and really do miss it.  After 6 years in real estate I moved on to work for Canada’s largest telecommunications company in the customer care centre but we will save that for another story.

Based on my evolution, if I may, from the “pen, paper, and corded phone” environment to the “crazy, cool, wireless, virtual workforce” I can say first hand that today’s executives handle a lot more then they use to in the “secretary” days.

Technology makes it easy for executives to administer their own tasks quickly and effectively. Technology makes it easy for corporations to install automated customer service systems.  Technology makes it easy to get rid of pen and paper.

Technology makes it easy for executives and busy professionals to max out their technology to do, and technology to learn lists.

And finally, technology makes it easy for people who are educated in administration to fast track their skill sets to gain that highly sought after competitive edge that will keep you in demand and in the know.

Keep your skills fresh.  Learn everything you can about Internet Marketing. Learn everything you can about boosting your clients or companies business online.

I network with 1000’s of business professionals.  These professionals are all turning to the Internet in droves.  It makes sense and is imperative to the success of the virtual assistant to learn everything they can about Internet related business.

If a VA or potential VA does not have the desire to learn the basics of online marketing how competitive will they be in this rapidly expanding virtual profession?

I have found two solutions that work for my Internet Marketing Virtual Assistant business.

  1. VAnetworking.com
  2. VAclassroom.com

The first solution, VAnetworking.com is like my home base. It’s a safe place that I can go any day or night that will always give me a solution, and idea, a friend, a challenge, a kick in the butt… And the founder, Tawnya Sutherland, along with several of the almost 10,000 members are Internet Marketing specialists. If you become a VAinsider you get to basically pick their brains anytime, attend exclusive Internet Marketing seminars, and network amongst these guru’s.

The second solution, VAclassroom.com is my secret weapon.  This virtual assistant training centre is designed specifically to provide anyone with the skills, knowledge, and additional resources to literally fast track your skill set with an Internet Marketing Virtual Assistant certification program. It’s a membership based learning environment that is committed to seek out and teach us how to implement all the latest, coolest, and effective technology and skills that business owners need in order to keep up their competitive edge.

I love learning, networking, and sifting through over 500 news stories a day in my Google Reader but really, at the end of the day I get tired.  Sometimes overwhelmed or even fed up.

But by taking advantage of the resources I mentioned above I am able to relax more knowing that I have a “committee” of people to support me and ultimately want to see me succeed.

Frances, I enjoyed reading about the comparison on the old paper and wired admin days….. Interesting how executives have actually taken on more of the responsibility of handling admin tasks because of the technology available. Are they holding onto more of the stress than they did in the previous era?
s:)

Suzanne, that is a great question about holding onto more stress. I think it comes down to personality and leadership style. Some are closed door, you must make an appt to see me, and then others are open door all the time happy go lucky.

Executives out there - are you feeling stressed by taking on more technology related responsibilities?
